Summary: E. Donald Lum came from a newspaper family. He was born in Graceville, Minn., in 1903 and moved with his parents to Kensal, N.D., when he was only a few months old. In Kensal his father, Elmour, became publisher of the Kensal weekly newspaper. Donald's father later became publisher of the Foster County Independent at Carrington, and owned newspapers in Monango, Valley City, Mayville and several locations in Minnesota. Lum mastered the Linotype during his high school years in Mayville. He later attended Hamline University and worked at Augsburg Publishing Co. In 1925, Lum joined his father as editor of the Valley City Times-Record. Three years later, the family moved to Wahpeton, ND, where they bought and consolidated the Richland County Farmer and the Wahpeton Globe into the Richland County Farmer-Globe, the first semi-weekly in the tri-state area. Lum was a member of the North Dakota Press Association from 1925 until his accidental death in 1975 in Florida. Lum had also been a member of the Minnesota and National Newspaper Associations and the Minnesota Press Club. He was a past president of Sigma Delta Chi, the professional journalism society, and was a member of various civic groups. He was president of the North Dakota Press Association in 1955, and in 1985 became the 27th member of the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame.
