Summary: John D. "Jack" Morgan (1925-1989) was an award-winning, thought-provoking columnist and publisher involved in the North Dakota newspaper industry for more than 50 years. He worked with and carried on a standard of excellence set by his father, Rilie R. Morgan. He helped many people start and further their careers in all facets of the newspaper industry. He dedicated his life to promoting the newspaper industry over all other forms of media. He truly believed in its ability to promote products, help people keep in touch with the community and surrounding area, and preserve history. Mr. Morgan was the business manager of the Walsh County Record before it became the Grafton Record, and he later became the publisher. As publisher, he wrote, "The Publisher's Weekly Report," a column that inspired countless debates in the community. He was on the board of directors for the North Dakota Press Association from 1964-1972, and served as NDPA president in 1971-72. He won an NDPA Better Newspaper Contest award for his column in 1978 and was named to the 50-year Club in 1988. He was a member of Kiwanis, Toastmasters, Eagles, American Legion and the Chamber of Commerce. He was on the board of directors for Heritage Village, VFW, United Givers, Grafton Community Development Corporation and the Walsh County Historical Society, serving for a time as its president.
