Summary: Rilie R. Morgan (1891-1977) began his newspaper career at the age of 13 as a carrier for a daily newspaper in his home town of Cherryvale, Kan. He was inducted into the NDNA Halll of Fame in 1979 as the 22nd member. He was a printer with the Great Falls, Mont., Tribune for four years and bought his first weekly newspaper in 1914 at Starkweather. He moved to Grafton in 1922 to become editor of The Walsh County Record, and purchased the newspaper in 1923. His affiliation with that newspaper continued until his death May 20, 1977. At the time of his death Morgan was publisher emeritus of The Grafton Record. He retired from active management of The Record in 1958 when his son John, became publisher. Morgan was president of the North Dakota Press Association in 1922. He served three terms as a state senator for the 4th Legislative district and was a member of the Senate appropriation committee for 12 years. In 1954 he retired from the Senate and active participation in politics.
