Summary: Harry Francis O'Brien, publisher of the Park River Press from 1930 until his death in 1953, was inducted into the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame in 1980 at the same time as Stella Irene Mann. They became the 23rd and 24th members. O'Brien was born on a farm near Webster, N.D., and attended Devils Lake High School. He served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France during World War I and then studied journalism at Dunwoody Institute, Minneapolis, before taking over the Park River newspaper. He was active in district and state Democratic party politics, serving in the legislature 18 years. In 1950, he was the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, opposing Milton R. Young. He served as president of the North Dakota Press Association in 1939. When he died in 1953, his widow, Rosamond, retained the newspaper until selling it in 1956 to Harry's nephew, Henry Kelly.
