Summary: Alton G. 'Glenn' Sorlie's quiet leadership provided the Bismarck Tribune with unprecedented growth. While he was publisher, from 1962 to 1982, the Tribune's circulation more than doubled. Before becoming publisher, Sorlei was a photographer, wire editor, city editor, managing editor and assistant publisher at the Tribune. He made excellent use of his complete knowledge of the newspaper. He was known for letting his employees run their departments. Sorlie as a firm believer in the independence of the newsroom. This was reflected in his advocacy and strong defense of North Dakota's open records-open meetings laws. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from June 1942 to January 1946. He participated in battles in France and Germany, receiving the Purple Heart, Silver Stat, Bronze star and the French Croix de Guerre. Active in his community, Sorlie served as director of the Bismarck Rotary Club for two terms, director of the Bismarck Chamber of Commerce for three terms, president of the Dakota Zoological Society, director and treasurer of Medcenter One Hospital, and as a trustee of the Missouri Valley YMCA. Sorlie was also active in his industry. He was president of the North Dakota Newspaper Association in 1979-1980, director of the Northwest Daily Press Association in 1961, and member of the Associated Press Managing Editors Association, American Newspaper Publishers Association and Inland Daily Press Association. Sorlie was an original member of the North Dakota Newspaper Association Education Foundation and helped draft its articles of incorporation. He was a member of the Foundation's board from 1978 to 1991, serving as president for 10 years. He received numerous civic awards during his career, and was inducted in 1999 into the North Dakota Newspaper Hall of Fame.
