Summary: Francis A. Wardwell (1844-1928) publisher of the Pembina Pioneer-Express for more than 20 years, was elected the seventh member of the North Dakota Press Hall of Fame in 1937. A seaman for many years, Wardwell first came to Pembina as a construction worker to build quarters for members of the boundary commission. After studying at St. Cloud, Minn., he returned to Pembina in 1877 to teach in the public school, which had been established two years earlier as the first public school in what later became North Dakota. This first teaching job began nearly 50 years of public service by Wardwell, which included terms as county treasurer and as county superintendent of schools. In 1887 he formed a partnership with G.G. Thompson to buy the Pembina Pioneer and the Pembina Express, which they combined to form the Pioneer-Express. Wardwell edited the paper until failing health forced him to move to Colorado and then to California. He served as president of the North Dakota Press Association in 1899.
