After working as a printer in the Red River Valley for eight years, he established a newspaper in Caledonia, Minn., in 1876. Three years later he moved his paper to Grand Forks as the Grand Forks Weekly Herald, outliving several competing newspapers. The Herald was converted to a daily in 1881. Winship served as president of the North Dakota Press Association in 1895, and was elected a state senator in 1889. He later served as State Oil Inspector and Register of the Federal Land Office. In the early years of statehood he carried he fight against the political machine that was dominating North Dakota. Seeing his fortune swept away in the panic of 1893, Winship re-established and built the largest printing house in the state before retiring in 1911.
