Summary: Pat McLean, the 2016 North Dakota Broadcasters Pioneer Award recipient, was born and raised in Hillsboro. After graduating from the University of North Dakota with a degree in Journalism/Advertising and Public Relations, he started his 38-year career in broadcasting at KKXL Radio in Grand Forks. In 1987 he became part owner of KJKJ-FM, and later KQHT-FM. With the onset of consolidation, he managed the Clear Channel (later iHeart Media) cluster of radio stations in Grand Forks for almost 20 years and for a time oversaw the iHeart radio groups in Bismarck and Dickinson. When Clear Channel Grand Forks was awarded the broadcast rights for University of North Dakota Athletics, he helped establish the first statewide radio network; a network copied by other university systems. Throughout his entire broadcasting career Pat made time to work with and serve on Civic and non-profit boards including United Way, ND Special Olympics, Boy Scouts of America, Optimist Club, Empire Arts Center, Chamber of Commerce, GGF Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Alerus Center Commission. Pat retired at the end of 2015 and still does some consulting.
