Summary: Ilene Schmidt, 78 years young, Bismarck, ND, earned her wings and went to her new home in Heaven on February 19, 2021, at Baptist Health Care Center, Bismarck. A memorial service was held February 24, 2021, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with Greg Runyon officiating. Committal was at Fisher Cemetery, Tappen, ND. Ilene was born March 8, 1942, in Jamestown, ND, the second of five daughters to Samuel and Freida (Geist) Schmidt who farmed in rural Tappen. She received her education at Tappen Grade School, a Kidder County school and Ely, MN, high school. She attended youth fellowship in Tappen and was confirmed in Ely. Growing up she worked on the farm milking cows, babysitting, and at a resort in Babbitt, MN. Ilene’s family later moved to Michigan, ND, where she met and married Kenneth Olson on September 2, 1962, at Michigan Lutheran Church. They raised their four children and moved about North Dakota because of Kenny’s job as a crane operator. They later divorced after 14 years of marriage. They continued to co-parent their children and remained friends. Ilene enjoyed gardening, crocheting, playing cards and pool, crafting, and baking. She always said she was a jack of all trades and master of none. She waitressed, did secretarial work, upholsterer, sold Mary Kay (even met the Mary Kay in Texas), sold TriChem and worked retail among various other jobs. Ilene knew no stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, then part ways gaining a new friend. She was kind, loving, spunky, sassy, strong, independent, caring, funny, and so much more. She moved about between North Dakota and northeastern Minnesota throughout her adult life. She later settled within the Bismarck/Mandan area in the 1980s. Her pride and joy were her children, grandkids and great-grandkids. Ilene is survived by her sons, Craig Olson (DeAnna Dailey), Bismarck, and Scott (Michele) Olson, Hazen, ND, and her daughter, Kristie (Robert) Curtis, Lincoln, ND; grandchildren, Ashlee Whitemire, Bismarck, Desiree Olson with great-granddaughter KayDeanna, Mandan, Dane Dailey with great-grandsons Drayden, Daymond and Dominic, Bismarck; Samantha (Michael) Kessel with great-grandsons Treyven, Brey and Huksley and great-granddaughter Mayzie, Lincoln; Shelby (Brent) Rogers with great-granddaughters Mary, baby Corinna (still in the oven) and great-grandson Eli, Nevis, MN, Jacob Olson and girlfriend Ericka, Hazen; Ethan Olson and girlfriend Brittany, Bismarck, and Samuel (Courtney) Olson, Fayetteville, NC; sisters, Bettie Buchfink, Fargo, ND, Luella Otterson, Grand Forks, ND, Marlys (Milton) Schmidt, Petersburg, ND, and Virginia Schmidt, Fargo; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces/nephews, and MANY friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Kevin; grandson, Devon; her parents; brothers-in-law, LaRue (Bud) and Jess Jr. (Dub); along with several great-grandchildren lost during pregnancy.

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
