Summary: Donald D. Tanner passed away on March 26, 2024. A funeral Mass was held on April 8, 2024, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Mandaree, ND. Interment was in St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Mandaree, ND. Donald David (Gulseth) Tanner was born February 15, 1947, in Faribault, MN. His father was killed in WWII and his mother gave him up for adoption for she couldn’t raise him on her own. The Tanners adopted him and raised him in Minneapolis, MN. Donald enjoyed playing hockey outside in the rinks and football with a leather helmet. He graduated from high school and joined the Army. He served in Vietnam for 1½ years and then came back home. Donald did several different things from shearing sheep, farmwork, to even a truck driver. Donald met the love of his life, Savannah, and he helped raise her children in Dickinson, ND. After her passing, he decided to move to Fargo, ND. After his retirement, he just couldn’t stop working. He decided to work part-time at the VA Hospital. Donald was just recently told that he was the oldest employee at the VA Hospital in Fargo. He was very proud of that! Donald was an avid animal lover, and he enjoyed feeding the birds that visited the VA for years. Even when it was cold outside, he would go out to feed the birds. He also enjoyed feeding the rabbits that visited his backyard. His love for animals was special and one of his favorite things was to give dog treats especially for the service dogs at the VA. He always carried treats in his backpack. He also always carried Dum Dum suckers for the little kids he would come upon that were crying at the store. He would cheer them up by giving them a lollipop or by giving them a quarter! Donald was also a sports fanatic, and he knew every score of the yesterday’s games including the Vikings, Timberwolves, Twins, all of Minnesota college games, and lately the “Big Dance” College. His favorite band was “The Rolling Stones.” Don enjoyed his time with Carlo, Miguel, Yazzie Jr., and Daniel Reimer whom he would call “The Boys.” He always made sure that everyone was always taken care of. He would wake up in the morning and tell Teddy “I’m ready for my coffee.” Don was so happy to see how everyone grew up and especially so proud that he had a lot of grandchildren. The grandbabies always made his day when they called him “grandpa.” Don would always be sure that he said goodbye by saying “I love you more.” That will always be a memory that will never be forgotten along with his big smile. Donald was a true friend to all those his kind and had a true gentle spirit. We will miss making him his cup of coffee. Donald is survived by his daughters, Andrietta (Ted) Siers, of Mandaree, and Lucy Touchine, of Dickinson; 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Savannah Touchine; his sons, Yazzie Touchine Jr., Carlo Touchine, and Miguel Touchine; his daughters, Kimberly Touchine and Lucinda Touchine.

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
