He attended the rural one-room, eighth grade school in Plumer Twp., and high school in Crosby. He then went to Los Angeles, California, staying with relatives and attended evening school while working for the Postal Telegraph Cable Co. With the war going on, he volunteered as an assistant air raid Warden, patrolling an area to ensure no lights faced the sea, which would enable German subs to locate U.S. ships off shore. Enlisting in the Navy in August, 1942, he took basic training and several weeks of Hospital Corps school at San Diego, CA followed by duty assignments at San Diego Naval Hospital, and Navy and Marine Corps air stations nearby and at El Centro, CA. He was then sent to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on a Navy Destroyer ship, for duty at a new Navy Hospital, which received war casualties from the South Pacific. In August 1945, while waiting for assignment to a medical group to follow the invasion of Japan, the war ended and he returned to the U.S., where he re-enlisted, and after a furlough at home, was assigned duty aboard several ships, including the Battleship USS Missouri. After his discharge in 1947, he remained in the Naval Reserve, and was soon recalled for duty as a recruiter for the Korean War, then went aboard ships to the Caribbean, passing through the Panama Canal twice and to Barter Island, north of Alaska. After his discharge from the Navy in 1951, he lived and worked in Seattle, WA including the Great Northern Railroad, and in Long Beach, CA, Miami, FL, McAllen and San Antonio, Texas, and Astoria, Oregon. Having been in all 50 states, Canada and Mexico and after his father's death in 1961, he returned home to Crosby to assist his mother. After her death in 1972, he moved to Williston, ND but spent many winters in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, and in Arizona. He later moved to the St. Luke's Sunrise Care Center in Crosby, where he resided until his passing. Joseph was a member of the Great Northern Railroad Historical Society. His interests and hobbies include U.S. Navy Histories and stories and model trains. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and his wife, Clara and Frank and his wife, Adeline.
