Summary: Mary Ann Kalvoda, 80, Mandan, died peacefully on July 10, 2017 at Sanford Health surrounded by her loving family. Mass of Christian Burial was held July 13, 2017 at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Nick Schneider as celebrant. Burial was at Mandan Union Cemetery. Mary Ann was born on December 20, 1936 in Bismarck, the daughter of James and Magdalen (Schantz) Knoll. She was raised and educated in Mandan where she graduated from Mandan High School in 1954. She attended St. Alexius School of Nursing, graduating in 1957 as a Registered Nurse. On November 27, 1957, she married the love of her life, Joe Kalvoda, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mandan. She began her nursing career at Mandan Hospital where she worked until 1962. After raising a family and helping on the family farm, she returned to nursing in 1974 at the Mandan Villa. She retired from nursing in 1999. Mary Ann was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Fort McKeen Homemakers and West River Lions. She was a 4-H Leader, played organ for church and weddings, and was on the Christ the King Parish Council and School Board. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, word games, puzzles and playing games with family and friends.  A gentle and loving mother with a never-ending smile will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Blessed to have shared her life were her husband of nearly 60 years, Joe; her children, Deb (Joe) Braun, Kathy (Dave) Kottsick, Lorie (Dwight) Pletan, Sharon (Mark) Malm, Joan (Jeff) Dietz, Joe (Laura) Kalvoda and Julie (Joe) Crispell, all live in Bismarck/Mandan area; 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; brothers-and sisters-in-law, Dolores Knoll, Emil (Mary) Kalvoda, Frances Lauzer, Lillian (Karl) Kruzela and Henry (Josie) Kalvoda and honorary sister, Lila Kalvoda. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, James (Cecelia) and Eugene. “Your physical being may be gone but your spirit lives on with us.”

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
