Robert “Bob” Sevde, 80 formerly of Williston, ND, passed away April 13, 2017, at the Eventide Sheyenne Crossing Nursing Home in West Fargo, ND, with his children and grandchildren by his side. His Mass of Christian burial was celebrated April 22, 2017, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Williston. Father Russel Kovash officiated and interment in Riverview Cemetery followed the service.
Robert Jerome Sevde was born to Jerome and Lydia (Johnson) Sevde in Grand Forks, ND, on April 4, 1937. He was raised and educated in Minot, ND, before moving to Williston and graduating with the Williston High School Class of 1955. While in school, Bob was very active in sports, band, and choir, and was involved in numerous high school committees like homecoming and Coyote Capers. He lettered in band, football, track and wrestling. Outside of school, Bob was a very gifted violinist and would perform violin solos for memorials and other functions in Williston. At a very young age, Bob started spending his summers and any free time he had working on his Grandpa Johnson’s farm in Grenora, ND, and he cherished that time for the rest of his life.
Upon graduation Robert worked that summer putting up grain silos with his brother Jim in Montana. He then moved to Fargo, ND, where he attended NDSU and studied architecture. In 1958 Robert entered the United States Air Force where he was a lieutenant and received pilot training in Lubbock, TX. On April 29, 1959, he received his commission and served as an Air Force jet pilot. He then worked for the North Dakota Air National Guard in Fargo.
On December 30, 1959, Robert married Karen Yvonne Kline at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Williston. They then spent most of their life in Williston and raised their children there. Bob worked for Burlington Northern Railroad and Soo Line Railroad and moved to Minneapolis, MN, and Enderlin, ND, to work for the railroad. He then moved back to Williston and started working in drafting, estimating and construction for many builders and construction companies. Bob had a twenty-five year drafting and estimating career with Farmers Union Lumber of Williston and then later went into business for himself naming it RJ’s Drafting and Design.
Bob was a Jaycee member and ran the movie theater in Enderlin for a couple years. He also got involved in theatre and performed in plays and once got shot out of a cannon! After moving back to Williston, he was an active member of the Elks Club there, and also got involved with the 6th Infantry spending a lot of time at Fort Union and Fort Buford. He continued his love and involvement with music and spent many years playing base violin with the Williston Strings and performed at many weddings, funerals, and Christmas and July 4th celebrations.
Besides being an amazing draftsman, he was a wonderful artist; he painted horses, landscapes and his family farm. He loved music, especially orchestra or violin which he continued to listen to and play. He was a carpenter and was always helping others with house plans or remodeling projects. He loved woodworking and had numerous hobbies. He loved anything that had to do with ancestry or his family’s farm in Grenora. He was a very nostalgic person and collected anything that reminded him of days gone by.
Surviving Robert are his daughters, Kate Preisler, Fargo, and Virginia Jacobsen, Grand Forks, ND; his son, Greg Sevde, Lakeville, MN; three grandchildren, Robert Jacobsen, Grand Forks, and Marisa and Jacob Preisler, Fargo; one brother, Jim Sevde and his wife Barbara, West Linn, OR; one sister, Avis Mreen and her husband, Jim, Wilsonville, OR; and a special sister-in-law, Toni Cummins and her husband, Ralph, Bremerton, WA.
