Summary: Cleo Furuseth of Williston passed away peacefully, her family by her side, on Sunday morning, December 3rd, at Trinity Hospital in Minot. Cleo was 87. A memorial service celebrating Cleo’s life was held on Wednesday morning, December 6, 2017 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel at First Lutheran Church in Williston, ND.  Rev. Janet Hernes Mathistad officiated.  In accordance with Cleo’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Burial will took place in the spring. Cleo June Angeline Haroldson Furuseth was born in Coteau, ND on July 8, 1930 to Harry and Myrtle (Lindblad) Haroldson. She attended school in Coteau, spending her senior year at Addamson High School in Dallas, TX. After graduating with a degree in French and Spanish from Jamestown College, she began teaching in LaMoure, ND. There she met Norman Furuseth, a fellow teacher, and they fell in love- much to the delight of their students. They were married in 1954 and after another year in LaMoure, they moved to Roseau, MN for a year. In 1956, they moved to Williston, where they lived for the next ten years. During this time their family grew to six. In 1966, they moved to Albany, Oregon, and in 1969 to Stuttgart, Germany, where Cleo taught kindergarten and truly enjoyed traveling in Europe for five years. Always a lover of art and culture, she took full advantage of those years overseas. In 1974, the family returned to Williston. She was soon appointed Williams County Superintendent of Schools, a position she held until her retirement in 1986. Cleo was a wonderful wife and mother, who loved to laugh at a good joke, plant and nurture unique and beautiful gardens, give fanciful tea parties for her beloved granddaughters, play duets with her daughters and accompany church choirs, family and friends on the piano. She adored traveling and exploring other cultures, speaking French or Spanish when she got the chance. She took great pleasure in decorating her house and loved to change things around with the seasons, causing her family to occasionally bump into furniture in the dark. There was a time when Norm woke up at 3am to find her missing. He looked and looked for her and finally found her in the garage mixing paint. She’d had an idea for the perfect color and she didn’t want to forget it by morning! Cleo is preceded in death by her husband, Norman, her great-granddaughter, Brinley Pennington, her parents, sister and brother. She is survived by her son, Eric Furuseth of Minot, daughter Beret Hagen and son-in-law Doug Hagen of San Diego, son Pete Furuseth and daughter-in-law Laurie Furuseth of Williston, and daughter Jenny Furuseth and son-in-law Mike Hubnik of Minneapolis, as well as her four granddaughters Liv Hagen Gorman, Greta Furuseth Pennington, Hanna Hagen, and Maren Furuseth, great-granddaughters Sawyer Pennington, Freya Gorman, and Rowyn Pennington, nieces and nephews, and dear friends.
