Inscription/Marks: 1/26/1915
Summary: Herbert Mischke, 94, of Williston, ND formerly a longtime resident of Bonetraill, ND, passed away February 22, 2009, at the Bethel Lutheran Home in Williston. His funeral was celebrated February 26, 2009, at West Prairie Lutheran Church with Pastor Timothy Solberg officiating. Interment was in Cow Creek Cemetery, rural Williston. Herbert Emil Mischke was born January 26, 1915 in Bonetraill, the son of Henry and Karoline (Stirum) Mischke. He was raised and educated in the community, baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church. In 1941, Herbert enlisted in the US Army and spent the next three and one-half years defending his country, being assigned to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska and in Italy. On September 11, 1952, Herbert was united in marriage to Mildred (Frisinger) Bulson in Williston. They established their home northwest of Williston and resided there until 1993 when Mildred passed away. Herbert then moved into Williston where he resided for a time at the Kensington until moving into the Bethel Home in 2006. Herbert is survived by his five children, Nola (Wayne) Roesler of Leonard, ND and their children, Cris Olson, Amber, Sara and Justin Roesler, Michael (Mary) Bulson, of Ogden, UT and their children, Eric (Alison) and Ben; Dan (Kathy) and their children, Shane, Julie and Tracey (Matt); Dale (Jody) and his children, Kevin (Jodi) and Angela (Brad) Ekblad; and Karoline (Steve) Wingerter and their children, Nathan and Emily, 12 great-grandchildren; his brother, Harry (Darlene) and a sister, Harriet Jensen of Williston, and numerous nieces and nephews. If you ever heard the phrase "you can take the farmer from the country, but you can't take the country from the farmer," then you would have known Herbert without even meeting him. Herbert was all farmer - he tilled the land raising wheat, barley and oats and he did not believe in chemicals - only what the good Lord would help him produce each year. He also milked cows and during years when the crops failed, the production of milk would carry his family through. Herbert always enjoyed playing cards whether it be pinochle or whist and enjoyed the company of others, especially his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and listening to his sister, Harriet, play her accordion. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edwin, Willis and Howard; and one sister, Lydia Schmidt.
