Summary: Hazel Marion Pehl, 85, Bismarck, ND, died July 10, 2018, at Baptist Health Care Center in Bismarck. Services were held July 20, at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck, with Pastor Allen Finger officiating. Burial was at Mennonite Zion Cemetery in Arena. Hazel was born on September 12, 1932, on the family farm at Arena, the eldest of seven children, to David and Lillian Buller. She graduated from Mountain Lake, MN, High School. On May 8, 1958, she married Neil Pehl, who just happened to be born 6 days later in 1932 and lived just a quarter of a mile away. After they married they settled on the family farm of Neil’s grandfather in Lien Township, where they raised their son. They continued to live on the farm until 2005, before retiring and moving to Steele. They were married for 53 years before Neil passed away in 2011. She spent much of her youth helping with household chores on the farm with a growing family. She had the gift of service, and that continued throughout her life.  Hazel lived in Minnesota for some time to get her education before returning to North Dakota where she began working at Sterling and eventually the Bank of Steele for over 30 years as a teller and bookkeeper.  She loved working at the bank, but also living on the farm. Beyond just the normal house hold duties, Hazel was an excellent cook and baker. She was very well-known in the area for baking cookies and especially cakes. Cakes of every kind, from birthdays, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, etc. Hazel was always available to help others. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years, involved in Ladies bible study, sewing clothes for her family, and friends. She was a very accomplished needle point maker, making blankets, and embroidering pillow cases and various other items. She would continue until just recently to make these things in spite of some physical limitations, even sewing late into the night. Although she was known as a quiet individual, she had a strong faith and conviction in God, in which she taught to her family and others. Hazel is survived by her son, Kory and daughter-in-law Rejane Pehl, Edmond, OK.; grandchildren, Lukas and Lilyann Pehl, Edmond; brother, Laverne and Thelma Buller, Anchorage, AK; brother, Jerry Buller, Thermopolis, WY; brother, Leland and Debbie Buller, Arena; and brother, Larry and Linda Buller, Bismarck. She was preceded in death by her husband, Neil; her parents, David and Lillian; sister, Joyce (Jukulen), Marjorie (Haugen); and brothers-in-law, Lloyd Jukulen and Donald Haugen.
