Summary: Rolland “Spud” Thompson, 68, of Dickinson, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2020, at Marian Manor Healthcare, Glen Ullin. Memorial service was at 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 12, 2020, at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson, with Pastor Ross Reinhiller officiating. Burial followed at the ND Veterans Cemetery. Spud was born in Portland, Oregon on May 28, 1952, the son of James and Betty (McDonald) Thompson. He had an adventurous childhood, living in Alaska, France, Texas, Kansas, and North Dakota. He graduated in 1970 in Larimore, North Dakota. Rolland enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Tampa, Florida and Grand Forks, North Dakota. While in Texas, he attended tech school for welding. Spud came to Dickinson in 1981 to work in the oilfield, doing various rig jobs. He later married Cassie Birdsall. Spud worked as a structural welder, constructing grain elevators and additions to the elevators in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska and Colorado until his eye sight prevented him from welding. Wherever Spud was he managed to join a bowling league. He bowled several years on the Amateur Bowling Tour (ABT) in the Twin Citites and Colorado. While in Dickinson, Spud bowled league four nights a week and often bowled the first shift at Classic Lanes and the late shift at Paragon Bowl. His proud moments were bowling league and tournaments with his son, Scotty. In 2016, he was inducted into the Dickinson Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Spud also spent many years racing dirt track enduro races, the Montana Bump-n-Run races and several demolition derbies. Spud is survived by his wife, Cassie; children, Jess (Cindy) of Surrey B.C., Canada, Cory (Lauren) of Pascagoula, MS, Scott (Amber) of Dickinson; nine grandchildren, Corrie, Nikola, Roiel, Cally, Aaden, Emmy, Kaitlyn, Hailey and Brayden; siblings, Robert “Bobby” (Lynn) Thompson of San Antonio, TX, Angela “Tater” (Errol) Hern of Tacoma, WA, DeMaris Strohm of Seattle, WA, Christy (Steve) Sleider of Burlington, WI, Nikki Edwards of Tacoma, WA; mother-in-law, Peggy Birdsall of Dickinson; brothers-in-law, Mike (Jenny) Birdsall of Cupertino, CA, Dodie Birdsall of Boise, ID; sisters-in-law, Carolyn (Bob) Fischer of Bismarck, Stephanie Farstveet and Rory Farstveet of Beach. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; Aunt, Lori McDonald; sisters, Renee and Robin; father-in-law, Sam Birdsall; sister-in-law, Marlene.

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
