Private family entombment will take place at the Dickinson Mausoleum. Maxine was born on May 22, 1938 to Herbert and Clara (Neckels) Zubke in Killdeer, ND. She was the youngest of four children. Maxine grew up in the Grassy Butte area. Her first six years were on a farm east of Grassy Butte and then her family purchased the Zubke Grocery Store. Maxine attended elementary school in Grassy Butte and then moved to Dickinson at the age of 14 to attend Model High School. She went on to receive her Standard Teaching Certificate and later earned her Bachelor of Elementary Education from Dickinson State University. Maxine’s first teaching job was in a one-room country school house near the Killdeer Mountains. She also taught at South Heart Elementary School. Maxine is best known for giving many of Dickinson’s youth their educational start at Jack-Be-Nimble Kindergarten, which she taught in the basement of her home. She also served as a state officer for NDAC before kindergarten came into the state of North Dakota. Maxine taught 21 years and then joined Leo at the family business, Queen City Beverage and Candy Company. They celebrated 50 years in business before retiring. Maxine was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Grassy Butte, serving as an organist from her teenage years through college. She later transferred to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Dickinson where she served on many boards in the church and was honored in 2011 for 50 years in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Maxine loved music and played the organ throughout her life for enjoyment. She also enjoyed coffee with friends, weekends at the lake, gardening, playing bingo and attending her grandchildren’s sporting event and activities. Her grandchildren always loved her monster cookies and sweet and sour pickles. Maxine married Leo Braun on August 5, 1958. They were blessed with three children, Kevin, Vonna and Curt. Leo and Maxine made Dickinson their home, except while Leo served in the US Army. During that time they lived in Colorado Springs, CO. Maxine is survived by her husband of 67 years, Leo; son, Kevin (Amy) Braun, Dickinson, ND; daughter, Vonna (Tim) Cheever, Eloy, AZ; daughter-in-law, Shelly Braun, Dickinson, ND; six grandchildren, Cory, Erin, Alex, Abby, Braxtyn and Jaxon; and one great-granddaughter, Winter.
