Summary: Love What Matters Our Mother’s Apron Written By: Marietta Karey The use of Grandma’s Apron was to protect her dresses underneath because she only had a few; Grandma wore them daily whether they were old or new. This Apron was a gift from above; it was used as potholders for removing hot pans from the oven, and to carry the large bread bowls that baked up the homemade bread that we all loved! The Apron was even wonderful at times for drying my brother’s and sister’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears. From the chicken coop, the Apron was used for carrying eggs. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables; often after the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls as well. When company came Aprons were ideal hiding places for us kids. It even worked for canning when it came to tightening lids. And then when unexpected company drove in, it was surprising how much furniture that old Apron could dust when a bit of cleaning began. When dinner was ready you would always see Grandma in her best Apron welcoming everyone in to share her meal. With delight, everyone took their place at the table with hungry appetites. When the meal was finished you would find Grandma smiling from within, for she knew the meal she had prepared was a definite win! Grandma sewed many Aprons for us all; whether you were a child short or tall. From cookies to caramel rolls, it treated us well and it surely didn’t matter how dirty it was, for none of us ever cared because all we caught from that Apron--- WAS LOVE We celebrate the love for Mary Dukart who passed January 5, 2021, at St. Luke’s Home.
