Summary: Emery C. Good Bird passed away on March 20, 2026. Funeral services were held March 28, 2026, at the Water Chief Hall in Mandaree, ND, with Pastor Damon Strum officiating. Interment was at Emery Good Bird Family Cemetery in Mandaree. Emery Chauncey Good Bird, Jr. was born on September 6, 1956, in Stanley, ND, to Charlotte Young and Emery Good Bird, Sr. He was a member of the Prairie Chicken Clan and a child of the Knife Clan. Emery or “Chauncey,” as many knew him, was an Army brat and resided in numerous places in his younger years, but later relocated to Mandaree, ND, which he made his forever home. Chauncey attended and graduated from Mandaree Public School in 1974. Chauncey proudly served in the United States Army, dedicating three years of his life to the service of this country. During his time in the Army, he excelled at basketball and had the opportunity to play overseas. He’d often receive a phone call from his favorite uncle Arnie telling him that the “Purple People Eaters” had a basketball tournament, and without hesitation, he’d jump on a plane and fly out, then later return to base. On September 15, 1981, he was honorably discharged. Chauncey returned home and later attended college at Chief Dull Knife Community College in Lame Deer, MT. He got his coaching certificate out of Williston, ND, and put it to great use for many years. Chauncey loved supporting the Mandaree Warriors, especially his children, in whatever sport they played. Those who knew him best understood that teasing was his way of acknowledging you. He had a one of a kind laugh known as the “Good Bird” laugh. Chauncey loved and cherished each and every one of his grandbabies, who all called him “Papa.” He shared a special bond with his namesake, Little Emree, who was his world. Chauncey will be greatly missed and forever loved by all who knew him. Emery is survived by his children, Emery III, Christopher, CJ, Derris, Steven, Chance, Emelee, Austin, Rachelle, Zane, Marla, and Donovan; his siblings; aunties, Ina Mae Driver, Dorris Spotted Bird; uncle, Leonard Good Bird; and his lifelong companion, Loretta Lone Bear. Emery is also survived by his devoted canine companion, “You,” who remained by his side, providing him with loyalty, comfort, and unconditional love. Emery is reunited with his grandma, Lena Elk; parents; children; sister, Ruby; brothers, Darryl Red Eagle and Eddie; uncles, Arnie and Herman; aunties, Betty Ann and Darlene.

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
