Summary: Carol Dunn, 75, of Carrington, ND, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026, surrounded by her family. A funeral service was held March 24, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Carrington. Carol Jean Lynne was born April 13, 1950, in the home of a midwife in Cooperstown, ND. She was the 6th child and last girl born to Carl Lynne and Evelyn Lynne (Tufte). Carol grew up on a farm in rural Binford, ND, where she learned from a young age the value of hard work, but she still made time for mischief with her sisters. Carol attended country school in first grade and then second grade in McHenry before transferring to the Binford school. Carol wanted to play basketball in school, but they didn’t have girls’ sports back then. She and one of her classmates wanted to start a girls' team, but the school said they couldn’t afford it. Carol’s love of sports led to her wanting to be a PE teacher when she grew up. Carol was the Binford Homecoming Queen when she was a sophomore, beating out junior and senior candidates. She graduated from Binford High School in 1968. In 1968, she moved to Carrington and started working at the Chieftain. There she met her devoted partner in life, the one her soul chose, Kenneth Dunn. Together they enjoyed cruising around town. In the winter months, they would drive around in the tow truck and pull people out of the snow out of kindness. The two dated for seven years before marrying on October 25, 1975. The pair moved into a small apartment after getting married and welcomed their first child, Jody, in 1976. From there, they purchased a house and made the big move…across the street. In 1979, they welcomed their son, Justin, into the family. In 1982, the family welcomed their last child, Kimberly. In the early 1970’s, Carol began her long retail career with Borth and Speidel, then Finley’s, followed by Petsinger’s, and lastly Borth’s. Carol dedicated thirty years to the same building, with various owners, and the clothing industry, where her expertise in shoes, apparel, and formal wear made her a trusted and valued resource for the businesses and the community. When Carol left the clothing business, she began working for Larry and Lucille Thompson and eventually, Rusty and Shelley Kollman at Hardware Hank. Even now, there are dozens of houses still painted with paint that she mixed. After Kenneth’s death in 1990, Carol raised three young children on her own. Jody, Justin, and Kimberly were her greatest accomplishment and her greatest joy until 2013, when she graduated to being a Grandma. Dawson made all of the years of hard work and sacrifice worthwhile. Carol retired from Hardware Hank in 2015, and rather than living the life of a typical retired person, she spent that time with Dawson. They played and laughed and went on adventures. They were best friends from the moment he was born. They were each other’s favorite person. In a room full of people she loved, she would always look for him and he for her. Carol enjoyed the simple joys of life—shopping, a good cup of coffee, reading, and spending meaningful time with friends. She had a love for puzzles and collecting keychains and souvenirs from her travels, each one holding special memories. Nothing meant more to her than family gatherings and reunions. She especially treasured playing games with Dawson and watching him play baseball, moments that brought her immense pride and happiness. Carol’s heart knew no limits. She had a special way of taking in those who needed love, always providing comfort, warmth, and a sense of home to anyone who needed it. Carol is survived by her children, Jody Dunn of Carrington, Justin Dunn of Carrington, and Kimberly (Brent), Morgan, and light of her life, Dawson Kubischta, all of Dickinson, ND; her sister, Gale (Mark) DeRouchy of Watertown, SD; and many nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her parents, Carl and Evelyn Lynne; her infant son, Thomas Christopher Dunn; her brothers, Carl Jr., Neil, and Larry; and sisters, Mavis Holland, Patricia Riedman, and Sharon Puterbaugh.

The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
