Summary: Robert Herz, 82, of Glen Ullin, ND, passed away on May 6, 2026, at St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck. Funeral Mass was held May 12, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Glen Ullin. Burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Cowboy hats were encouraged at the reception following the service as a special tribute to Bob. Robert "Bob" Herz was born to John and Emma (Fibiger) Herz on February 21, 1944. Bob grew up on the family farm next to St. Joseph's Church south of Glen Ullin. He attended country school in the Herz school district and spent his early years working on the family farm and helping neighboring farmers, where he developed a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for rural life and community. In 1962, Bob moved to Dickinson, ND, where he worked at Vantine's Paint & Glass. During this time, he married the love of his life, Elaine Duppong, on September 3, 1963. Together, they started their family and were blessed with four boys. In the spring of 1973, Bob and Elaine returned to the Glen Ullin area to farm and ranch, where they continued raising their family and welcomed four more children. Farming was more than a livelihood to Bob; it was a way of life that he deeply cherished. He treasured time spent visiting with neighbors, sharing stories, and building lasting friendships throughout the community. In social settings, Bob would introduce Elaine as "my bride," a reflection of the deep love he had for her. He also enjoyed old-time music and learned to play the accordion at a young age. Bob was known for his sense of humor and loved being a jokester, always bringing laughter to those around him. He also took pride in being meticulous, neat, and orderly. No matter where he was headed, Bob never left the house without first making sure the vehicle windows were clean and his cowboy hat was on. Faith and service were at the heart of Bob's life. Growing up near his country church, he learned the Latin prayers needed to serve mass and became an alter server at the age of 5. His devotion to the church remained strong throughout his life as he faithfully served as a Eucharistic Minister at Sacred Heart Church. Bob served several terms on the parish council and was a proud 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, serving in numerous leadership roles within both organizations over the years. Bob will be remembered for his strong faith, dedication to his family, love of farming, music, humor, and the kindness he shared with everyone he met. Bob is survived by his wife, Elaine Herz; his children, Mark and Lynnett (Miller) Herz of Fargo, ND, Glenn and Karla (Rothmann) Herz of Sioux Falls, SD, Darren and Deanne (Braun) Herz of Shakopee, MN, Ron and Laurie (Yanish) Herz of Grain Valley, MO, Michelle (Herz) and Korey Stomley of Epping, ND, Sherri (Herz) Repnow of Bismarck, ND, Vicki (Herz) and Ralph Smith II of Rayville, MO, and Brian and Sarah (Hsu) Herz of Bismarck, ND; 20 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Betty (Herz) and Duane Delabarre of Glen Ullin, ND, Gary and Roberta (Bleth) Herz of Bismarck, ND, John and Mary Jane (Fitterer) Herz of Grand Forks, ND, Loretta (Herz) and Chuck Gerving of Glen Ullin, ND, and Eddy Herz of Somerset, SD. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Herz; his grandson, Dalen Dorval; and his brothers, Clarence and Jim Herz.

Summary: The North Dakota Heritage Family Memorial Program is sponsored by the North Dakota Funeral Directors Association. The life stories of deceased North Dakotans are featured in an archvied collection. Current partners in the project are Eastgate Funeral & Cremation Services, Bismarck Evans Funeral Homes, Carrington and New Rockford Everson-Coughlin Funeral Home, Williston Fulkerson Funeral Home, Tioga Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home, Williston Nero Funeral Home, Bottineau Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck Springan Stevenson Funeral Home, Stanley Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson These funeral homes provide recent obituaries to the Foundation, where staff and volunteers format, edit and archive each memorial. The memorials are posted, and copies are sent to the family for their input and approval. The listing currently features more than 13,000 memorials, and is constantly updated as new memorials and histories are received.
