Title: William (ChWeUm) Davis
Date: ca. 1920
Summary: Portrait of ChWeUm Davis, sitting outside a house taking notes with his right hand and holding a book in his left. Born in Saint-Boniface in 1845, de was an early historian of the Turtle Mountain region. He preserved souvenirs and impressions of 19th century buffalo hunts, as well as his historical notes on the Turtle Mountain community, in five notebooks. Davis learned to read and write with Father Georges-Antoine Belcourt, who taught the children of Pembina (1845–1859), with the help of Red River Metis women. Davis left his notebooks in the care of the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Davis passed away January 27, 1937, in Belcourt, North Dakota. He was 91 years old.
