Summary: Three men stand at entrance to the A. O. Arnegard Mercantile Company store, another stands far photo right next to a Red Crown Gasoline pump. A horse-drawn carriage with two men stands on the street next to the store photo right. An automobile is parked on the side of the store photo left. The two story building has sign painted at top "Arnegard Mercantile Co." with a stone commemorating the establishment in 1913. [history-A. O. Arnegard Find-A-Grave] A. O. ARNEGARD SR., ARNEGARD PIONEER DIES ON JANUARY 22. Albert Olai Arnegard St., 84, Arnegard pioneer, passed away at the McKenzie County Memorial hospital on Monday, January 22nd. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 25th at 2 p.m. from the Wilmington Lutheran church in Arnegard. Robert Hobart Skilbred will officiate. Mrs. Clarence Leiseth will be organist and Clarence Leiseth, soloist. Burial will be made in the Wilmington cemetery at Arnegard. Active pallbearers will be Clifford Sovig, Lloyd Hedstrom, Orvis Evenson, Donald Shirley, Mervin Olson and Andrew Stenehjem. Honorary will include: Thorvald Bertinuson, Charles Fleck, John Sovig, Peter Stenehjem, O.N. Stenehjem, Ted Boe, Christ Hovde, Bryan Bjornstd, Carl Evenson, Arthur Moen, Lawrence Holen, John Braaten, Ole Juve and Ted Trehus. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Arnegard. he was born at Mayville, ND, Dec. 27, 1877. He attended a rural Mayville grade school, graduated from high school at Hillsboro and attended the University of ND for two years. He engaged in the hardware business in Hillsboro before coming west to homestead in 1907. He built the first inland store in Arnegard in 1908. On October 28, 1909, he married Emma Larson and to this union two sons were born, Albert Jr., who lives in Arnegard, and Cecil Emmet who passed away in infancy. Mr. Arnegard helped plat the original townsite of Arnegard in 1915 and built a large mercantile store the same year. He also farmed extensively and was postmaster for a number of years. He was a member of the Wilmington Lutheran church and served on various boards. He took an active part in community affairs. Was assessor for many years; director of the Federal Land Bank Association of Williston for several years; and also received a certificate for having served on the Soil Conservation Board of McKenzie county for 17 years. He was a lover of nature and an ardent gardner. Mrs. Arnegard passed away June 30, 1947, and on June 17, 1949, he was married to Alice Walla at Arnegard. Survivors, besides his wife Alice and son are four grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Annetta Lee, Flint, MI; Emma Arnegard, LaCross, WI; two brothers, Andrew of Grafton, and Oscar of Caledonia; and several nieces and nephews.

Title: North Dakota Oral History Project Photograph Collection

Summary: Consists of copies of photographs belonging to people interviewed for the North Dakota Oral History Project. The Project was undertaken by Larry Sprunk, with the cooperation of the North Dakota American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, the North Dakota Farmers Union, and the State Historical Society of North Dakota. The primary objective of the North Dakota Oral History Project was to conduct oral tape recorded interviews with North Dakotans who lived through the state's history and who could speak of this history from a first-hand basis. Interviewees were photographed at the time of their interviews. In addition, the project borrowed over 6,000 historical photographs which were copied and added to the State Historical Society's collection. Many interviewees also donated family histories, documents, letters, ledgers, books, and artifacts.
