Title: Leggings on the porch of a Fort Berthold Indian Reservation house with an unknown man
Date: Circa 1920
Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 86-554 and the stamp of a Mandan ND print shop.
Summary: On the porch of a wood-frame, clapboard-side house on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation two men, one identified as the Hidatsa Indian Leggings and the other an unidentified non-native. Leggings is wrapped in a patterned blanket over a long-sleeved light colored shirt. In his hands he holds a ceremonial metal axe, and on his head he wears what looks like an otter fur turban with a feather. The other man has short, combed back hair, trousers, a shirt and tie under a cardigan sweater. Likely dates to around 1920.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
