Inscription/Marks: The notations on the back identify the image as appearing on page 138 of Prairie Tales, and as showing Frances Ryan at the homestead, 2 miles northwest of Haley, N.D.
Summary: The homestead shack in this photograph from Bowman County (N.D.)'s Prairie Tales history volume, shows its owner, Frances Ryan standing in front of her sod home. The soddy is rectangular, gabled and features a door and a double-hung 2 over 2 light window. A shed extends off the right side, also with a doorway. The roof is visibly covered with sod. Frances Ryan wears a white blouse and a long skirt with a double stripe of decoration above hem.
