Nathaniel was born in 1891 on a farm near Mabel, Minnesota. In 1906, N. S. Nelson went to Crosby, North Dakota to visit his brother who had a store there. His health improved so much while in North Dakota that he decided to come west to homestead. In the spring of 1908 he came to locate a homestead. It was then he bought the relinquishment from Mr. Shannon for the quarter of land 1-1/2 miles southwest of Haley, in Harding County. He proved up on his land after five years. In the late summer of 1908 Mr. Nelson sold his farm located north of Mabel and came with his family by train to Scranton, North Dakota. His machinery, horses, cows, two buggies and household goods were shipped by emigrant car. Coming from Scranton in a wagon, they followed a trail to Haley which had been marked with flags by John Sabe to direct strangers to Haley. There were no fences at that time and John had marked a trail which by-passed many hills, went past the Sabe home and on south to Hayley. When first arriving here, the family lived in Ed Jackson’s house, south of their land, until their large frame home was completed. Mr. Nelson farmed and raised cattle. In 1947 he and his wife moved to Sacramento, California to live with their daughter, Ruth. There Mr. Nelson passed away in 1948 and his wife in 1963. Children: Ruth, Sacramento, California; Wesley, Phoenix Arizona; Maurice, Rapid City, South Dakota; James, Haley, North Dakota. Irving, Orlando Florida. Data by Ruth Nelson.
