Title: Cutting ice on the Brook-side (Booen) Farm
Date: ca. 1910
Inscription/Marks: Notations on the back identify the scene and the location at the Les Booen farm, known as the Brook-side Farm, and cites page 299 of Prairie Tales.
Summary: From the book Prairie Tales, a history of Bowman County (N.D.), this is a scene of men cutting ice at a farm near Bowman (N.D.) The farm belongs to early area photographer Les Booen. Standing on the ice are four men, one holding the long ice saw. Another man lies on his belly looking over the edge of the ice. On the bank between the water and the claim shack in the background a man in a cap sits and watches the scene. Cut squares of ice float in the open water in front of the workers. A horse waits to haul the ice. The building in the background is a tar-paper covered gable-front wood-frame shack with two windows on one side and a window and door on the other. A shed outhouse is covered with tar-paper as well. Around the claim shack are piles of dirt and pieces of wood.
