Title: Dakota Block East before fire
Date: ca. 1880
Creator: Barry, D. F.--(David Francis),--1854-1934
Inscription/Marks: On the back: Dak Block looking East -Bismarck, N. Dak....many years before the big fire.
Summary: Many businesses are visible in this east-looking view of Main Avenue in Bismarck. The Dakota Block is located in the corner at left, and boasts the offices of William A. Bentley, physician and surgeon; a druggists; and a clock and watch maker. Further down the block is the Bismarck National Bank. On the opposite side of the street, Weaver Lumber Co., the Northern Pacific Coal Co. and a dry goods store are visible.||Looking east on Main Street in Bismarck around 1895, it is easy to see that streets paved with brick would be cleaner and more efficient. Most of the Dakota Block, the brick building on the left side of the photo, survived a fire that destroyed downtown Bismarck in 1896.
