Title: Chief John Grass, the Sioux Orator

Inscription/Marks: On the back: Chief John Grass-The Sioux Orator.
Summary: Dakota Territory photographer D. F. Barry's studio portrait of John Grass shows Grass in a dark coat with a neckerchief tied around his neck. Grass had been a prominent figure in the Bozeman Trail wars and was known as a diplomat and an orator. He was a judge for thirty years, working for the Court of Indian Offenses, at Standing Rock.
