Title: The steamer Far West
Date: ca. 1880
Creator: Barry, D. F.--(David Francis),--1854-1934
Inscription/Marks: On the back are identifying stickers.
Summary: This photograph of the steamship Far West is captioned. The image itself shows the boat pulled up to the Missouri River bank, a double-plank walk-way bridging the distance between the bank and the deck. There is a platform or board-walk made of lengths of wood along the edge of the river. There are several men on the upper deck, near the huge steam pipes. Cords of wood are stacked on both sides of the lower deck. The far bank of the river is in the background. The caption under the picture says: Steamer Far West, the heroine of the upper river....(The spars, so frequently called into use in navigating the upper Missouri and the Yellowstone, are seen, suspended upright, near the bow. When Reno's wounded were carried down to Fort Lincoln, they were disposed on the main deck beneath the cabin, at the point where the after wood-pile appears in the photograph.)
