Collection: 00022H - Frank J. Hutchinson Photo Collection

Item: 00132
Title: Hidatsa leader Crow Flies High
Date: ca. 1880
Creator: Barry, D. F.--(David Francis),--1854-1934
Inscription/Marks: On the folder: Chief Crow Flies High -Gros Ventres head chief. (This of course is an misleading identification of the Hidatsa leader.)
Summary: This photograph by D.F. Barry shows the Hidatsa leader Crow Flies High in a tall eagle feather headdress and traditional decorated shirt. The quality is not good. His hair appears loose, and a single strand of beads circles his neck. The shirt seems to have bead or quill work designs and fringes. Something of a rebel among the Hidatsa, Crow Flies High and others like him settled their own village away from the other Hidatsa people. They were eventually considered a threat to Fort Buford, and removed from their camp to the reservation. In 1894, Crow Flies High resigned as chief, just before Fort Buford soldiers and Hidatsa scouts escorted him and 125 Hidatsas, 23 Mandans and 1 Arikara to the agency. He died of pneumonia in 1890.
