Title: Goodbird smokes a grass bundle over a small campfire

Inscription/Marks: On the front: 4-1914, which corresponds to numbering of Minnesota Historical Society Wilson photos. On the back: col. 86-422.
Summary: In a flat, bare cooking area outside his Fort Berthold Reservation home, Goodbird kneels on one knee beside a campfire holding a large cooking pot. A forked stick used to suspend pots angles over the small fire. Goodbird holds a sturdy stick on the end of which a grass bundle has been placed. A scapular hoe lies between Goodbird and the tent outside his house. A barrel and a baby carriage are beside the house. Taken in 1914 during the Gilbert L. Wilson ethnographic study of the Hidatsa, and marked with the number associated with his collection housed in the Minnesota Historical Society.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
