Title: Butterfly's wife working to spread ears of corn on a tradtional Hidatsa drying rack

Inscription/Marks: Above the image: col. 86-444. On the front: IV-2, which corresponds to numbering of Minnesota Historical Society Wilson photos. Also on the album page: "Butterfly's wife (see plate opposite page 48 of Agric of Hidatsa)".
Summary: In the space between a log cabin, a wagon, and a roof-less shed, Mrs. Butterfly is working on the platform of a traditional Hidatsa drying scaffold. She has built this rack of sturdy posts and is bending over to spread out the crops she will dry on the platform. A ladder is at one end for access. Taken in 1909 during the Gilbert L. Wilson ethnographic study of the Hidatsa culture on Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. ____This image is one of three mounted on the front and back of an album page.

Summary: Consists of prints and some copy negatives of several photographers on the Fort Berthold Reservation, primarily Gilbert L. Wilson, and also including Frances Densmore, Frank Fiske, Fred Olson, Sumner Matteson, and several unidentified photographers. Ewald wrote identification of many photographs in his collection based upon suggestions from the people of Fort Berthold. Images include celebrations and gatherings, dances, sweat lodges, Little Missouri camps, cradles, portraits, Buffalo Bird Woman, Wolf Chief, Goodbird, Indian crafts and skills, artifacts, wood gathering, gardening, food processing and cooking, earth lodges, bullboats, travois, and Indian cowboys.
