Title: Turning hogs into Liberty Bonds, a farm scene in North Dakota
Date: 1917-1918
Creator: Gilbert, Arthur Benson
Inscription/Marks: [back in black ink] Col. 55-27. FN9/x20 A Farm Scene in North Dakota. Turning Hogs into Liberty Bonds. (From Non-Partisan League collection.) Donor: A. B. Gilbert Mound, Minnesota. Summary: A man in work shirt, overalls and soft cap is seated in the driver's seat of a Ford automobile, ready to drive off the farm with a trailer load of hogs to sell for the Liberty Bond program. Lewis P. Miller of Clinton (Minn.) stands in hat, white shirt, tie, vest and slacks with a cigar gripped in his teeth and his left hand rest on top of the hog crate, the right hand resting on his right hip looking proud. In the background are farm buildings and a corral. The image accompanied a piece in the Nonpartisan Leader Vol. 6, No. 23, June 10, 1918, p12. The caption was: Here's a case where the picture tells a story. Those hogs in the trailer are squealing for liberty. Not the kind of hog-swilling, dirt-rooting liberty you might thin, but for American liberty and democracy over the whole world. They are on the way to be turned into Liberty bonds. The picture was enclosed in a letter from Lewis P. Miller of Clinton, Minnesota. He wrote to headquarters of the National Nonpartisan League as follows:
