Title: Verendrye Bridge before removal, Sanish (N.D.)
Date: 1950
Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 63-01a, information noted in the summary, "Garrison Reservoir. (McLean Co., N.D.), and the stamp in red "519C".
Summary: The photograph shows the setting of the Verendre Bridge over the Missouri River outside of Sanish, North Dakota. Taken in 1950, in anticipation of the ultimate destruction of this 4-arch trestle bridge, the image includes the buildings on the east-river side town of Sanish. The gentle curves of the river and the groves on the west bank give the scene a quiet appearance, and the view is looking up river, to the northwest. The Verendre Bridge was built in 1927, and named to remember the first white explorer recognized to come through the region. The bridge was removed in 1950 as part of the Garrison Reservoir reconstruction of the river. A new bridge to provide a crossing over the Missouri, the Four Bears Bridge, was later constructed in the area of New Town (N.D.). The photographer is noted only by the name "Grant", and likely this was an employee of some division of the state government.
