Title: Russell Reid, George Will, and Clell Gannon examining the fortification ditch at Menoken Indian Village

Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 63-07-1, "Fortification ditch (32BL2)", the red stamp"501C", and "Aug. 16, 1950".
Summary: Three men, identified as Russell Reid, George Will, and Clell Gannon, walk or kneel in a field on the site of the Menoken Indian Village. A shallow linear depression marks a fortification ditch which surrounded and protected the inhabitants of the village. This archaeological site near Bismarck, North Dakota was a fortified village associated with the Initial Middle Missouri Tradition from about 950 to 1300 AD.. It is one of the only sites predating sites more clearly associated with the historic Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara cultures. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964, and is a state historic site. Dated August 16, 1950.
