Folder: 0001
Item: 00007-2
Title: Fortification ditch at On-A-Slant Indian Village Site
Date: 8/16/1950
Inscription/Marks: On the back: col. 63-07-2, "Ditch on landward side", the red stamp"501C", and "Aug. 16, 1950".
Summary: A narrow trench runs from behind a thicket, skirting the base of a rise of prairie. Identified as a part of the fortification ditch that surrounded an Indian Village site. Notes indicate the site to be the Menoken Indian Village site in Burleigh County (N.D.), but the landscape does not support that. Menoken is on a level area above Apple Creek, and no higher ground is adjacent to the fortifications at that site. Almost definitely this photograph is from On-A-Slant Indian Village, as the landscape matches the location of that site. Photograph dates from Theo Mattson's trips in the Missouri River counties in the early 1950s.
