Item: 00001
Title: The Old Governor's Mansion, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: 4/1902
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0070-1.
Summary: At the time of this 1902 photograph, the Old Governor's Mansion in the capitol city if Bismarck (N.D.). was nearly twenty years old. This large Victorian Stick style home was built in 1884 by local businessman As Fisher. In 1893 he sold the house to the state of North Dakota for use as a residence for the governors of the state and their families. It served this function from 1893 until 1960. In this image, the two-story, wood-frame, complex gabled house was clad with clapboard siding, and decorated with the ornamentation typical to the stylistic sensibilities of the Victorian era. A wrought iron "widow's walk" is on the roof, and there are many gables and porches. Small trees have been established in the yard, which is enclosed by a metal fence. A wooden sidewalk runs in front of the house, and a mounting block is beside it. The top floor is a full attic, and the windows in this space are nicely curtained. A open front porch spans the front of the house from the front door to the east. Now a state historic site.
