Title: Mary Kane Burke (Mrs. John) in the parlor of the Old Governor's Mansion, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: 1912
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0071-2.
Summary: The wife of the 10th governor of the state of North Dakota is posed in this photograph from 1912 looking pensive in the north parlor of the Governor's Mansion in Bismarck (N.D.). In near profile, her hands rest lightly on a wooden fern stand, her head turned slightly. Her long dress has a square-cut neckline and elbow-length lace sleeves. The dark material of the gown has lace panels inset. Her hair is arranged in the upswept fashion of the 1910s. Around her are furnishings including a tufted leather armchair, the plant-stand, and mirror-topped buffet. The rug she stands on is a typical "oriental" carpet, placed over the wooden floor of the room. Gov. "Honest" John Burke was governor from 1907-1913.
