Title: The Asa Fisher house, Bismarck, Dakota Territory
Date: Circa 1885
Inscription/Marks: On the back of the card: 0071-4, "Received from Edgar P. Wyman, North Sandwich, NH, November 1981", and "Asa Fisher's House, Bismarck, D.T." in old ink.
Summary: A stereopticon photograph, the image is of a the interior of the Asa Fisher house on Avenue B, Bismarck, Dakota Territory. Built in 1884 by Asa Fisher, the house is furnished in the Victorian style that matches the distinctively Victorian Stick Style architecture of the exterior. The view looks through the house from the east living room, across the wide central hall, and allows a bit of the formal dining room on the west side of the front of the house to be seen. A wooden screen in the hallway protects against drafts from the front door to drift up the stairs. Typical of the time there are lots of pieces of furniture and knick-knacks. An brocade upholstered couch is along the inside wall of the room, a large portrait of a woman suspended from the picture rail on the wall over it. The portrait has a dark ribbon tied below it, possibly indicating mourning. A wooden chair with needle-point seat cushion is in the doorway by the couch. The dining room table is set with a fringed cloth. A brass and glass light-fixture hangs from the living room ceiling, and a vase sits with other objects on a small table. The house was sold to the state of North Dakota in 1893, to serve as the home for governors and their families.
