Collection: 00071 - Former Governors' Mansion Photograph Collection
Folder: 0001
Item: 00028
Title: Tom Lee, butler and cook for Governor Burke, posing in the old Governor's Mansion dining room, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: 1907-1913
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0071-28.
Summary: During the Governor John Burke Administration and the family's residence at the old Governor's Mansion, the house was fed and care-for by the man posing in the photograph, Tom Lee. Both cook and butler, in this picture Lee wears his chef's hat and white jacket, and he stands beside the highly polished dining room table. A tall vase of flowers is the centerpiece. Light comes into the room through the fine lace of the curtains in the tall windows of the 1884 Victorian home. Behind Mr. Lee is an empty plate rack on the wall, and a heavy Victorian, mirrored sideboard. Unusual for Bismarck (N.D.) at this time, 1907-1913, Tom Lee is a black man. The photograph comes from Marian Burke, the Governor's daughter.
