Title: Interior view of the Asa Fisher home, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: Circa 1890
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0071-40, and a good bit of information some of which is summarized above: "Received April 9, 1985 from Edgar P. Wyman North Sandwich, NH 03259...Asa Fisher House Bismarck, D.T....Gift of Barbara J. F. Wyman ne' Barbara Fairchild Frost daughter of Katherine Fairchild born to George Fairchild and Helen Viets Fairchild Bismark, d.T. 1881".
Summary: Donated by the descendants of early pioneers to Dakota Territory, this cabinet card photograph is of the interior of the Asa Fisher house in Bismarck, Dakota Territory. The crowded interior of the home shows a typical Victorian collection of furniture, oriental rugs, and brick-a-brack. The photograph is one of several given to the State Archives in Bismarck (N.D.) by Barbara Jocelyn Frost Fairchild and her husband Edgar. Mrs. Fairchild is descended from George Harnell Fairchild, a banking pioneer who settled for a time in the Dakota Territory town of Bismarck. He was associated with the famed surgeon of the Seventh Cavalry, Dr. Henry Porter. The two men founded a branch of the 1st National Bank in the town, and were married to sisters from Oberlin, Ohio. Porter married to Charlotte Viets, and Fairchild to Helen Viets, the great-great grandmother of Barbara Wyman. The house Asa Fisher built in 1884 was a showpiece for many of the local people. It was sold in 1893 to be used as a residence for the governors of the state, which it was until 1960.
