Title: North Parlor of the Old Governor's Mansion, Bismarck (N.D.)
Date: Circa 1900
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0071-77 replaces earlier number 0071-071.
Summary: Though undated, this photograph of the north section of the living room, or parlor, of the Old Governor's Mansion in Bismarck (N.D.), seems to date from relatively early in its use as residence for governors and their families. Built by Asa Fisher as a private dwelling in 1884, the house was sold to the state in 1893, and used as a home for seated governors until 1960, when a modern home was built. A classic Stick style Victorian house on the exterior, the furnishings are also reflective of the Victorian influence. The typical excesses of the period are evidenced in the lamps, tables, and generally heavy and dark quality of the objects and walls. A wide oval mirror dominates the north end of the room, from above the carved fireplace. Lace curtains drape the windows, and the room gleams with rich wood. Chairs and tables are spread comfortably around the room. Likely taken around the turn of the century, before some of the changes made during the Gov. White terms in office, 1901-1905.
