Summary: Two coal miners take a lunch break in the underground mine operated by the Knife River Mining Company of Beulah (N.D.). Open beside them as they sit in the cluttered floor of the mine shaft are their metal lunch boxes and thermos bottles. The men are coated in coal dust, which stains their clothes as well as their hands and faces. The miners wear hardhats and eat by the light cast by the carbide headlamps affixed to the hats. In lunchbox is a wrapper from a loaf of Wonder Bread. Photograph is attributed to the Bismarck Associated Press Bureau, Bismarck (N.D.).
