Inscription/Marks: On the front in white: 36237. On the back: 0075-023, "1T" and a paper card with the heading "Caterpillar Tractor Company, Peoria, Ill.", followed by lines on which specific information is asked for and answered. The information includes: "Rec'd from E. K. Edwards"; Date of letter containing photograph--11-15-40; Model-D8; owner-Truax-Traer Coal Co. Wilton, N. Dak.; and the following descriptive paragraph--"Caterpillar" Deisel D8 Tractor and LeTourneau Carryall scraper stripping overburden for open pit lignite coal mine. Working 21 hours a day on 4 gals. 11.3 cents fuel per hour. Av load 13 yards. 300' haul. Handling about 100 yds. material per hour"; and negative no. 36237".
Summary: Landscape is being stripped of the native vegetation by a man driving a Caterpillar D8 Tractor with a LeTourneau Carryall Scraper behind. Across the scene the land has been denuded and the scraper is nearly full of collected overburden. The machinery is part of the Truax-Traer Coal Company operation whose task is to strip mine for coal in the Wilton (N.D.) area. This image was collected by E.K. Edwards on 11/15/1940.
