Title: W. J. Steinbach and friends enjoy a picnic lunch in his shelterbelt, New Rockford (N.D.)
Date: 4/22/1905
Inscription/Marks: On the front in white: 384164. On the back: 0075-163, "5700", and the typed paragraph "Mr. W. J. Steinbach and some friends of New Rockford, N.D. are enjoying a picnic lunch on his shelterbelt. This shelterbelt was planted by the Prairie States Forestry Project in 1935. When these trees were being planted some people told him he would never live to see the day he could picnic under these trees. Well, here he is in 1939 and the picnic, too. Everyone in this picture liked this picnic among the trees and so did the photographer."
Summary: A wooden table, covered with a pretty cloth, sits in the space between two rows of shelterbelt trees on the farm property of W.J. Steinbach. Standing is a woman in a dress and apron, slicing great rounds of deliciously ripe watermelon. A small fair-haired girl in mary-jane shoes and ankle socks is seated on a cloth covered wooden fruit crate. Sharing a fruit crate bench behind the table are two men and a small fair boy. In overalls is New Rockford area farmer, W. J. Steinbach, on whose land the shelterbelt was started in 1935. The lunch is arrayed on the table-jars of pickles, pot of coffee, cups and covered food bowls. The trees appear to be about ten feet tall in this photograph from 1939, taken to show the growth and success of the trees planted by the Prairie States Forestry Project. This belt is composed of ten rows of trees, planted as part of the Cooperative Shelterbelt program, by the Prairie States Forestry Project in 1940.
