Title: WPA workers at site of the Mandan Filtration Plant, Mandan (N.D.)
Date: 1936-1938
Inscription/Marks: On the front in black ink: Mandan Filtration Plant". On the back: 0075-00191.
Summary: A number of WPA workers attend to a variety of tasks at the site of the Mandan (N.D.) Filtration Plant project. The site is an open pit being excavated to several different levels. On the highest terrace men lean into the shade of the dirt wall side of the pit, resting on their shovels. A utility truck is parked near a concrete back wall and men are gathered in groups near the vehicle. a surveyor's transit is set on the lowest level of the pit, and lines are staked out to give a level line to follow. The soil exposed in the middle of the excavation shows a nice stratigraphy of the local soil deposits. It is not clear which of the two plant improvement projects undertaken in the 1930s this scene captures. In 1936 a 1,000,000 gallon steel reservoir was added to the plant, in 1938 the site was remodeled to a capacity of 2,000,000.
