Title: View from a hill overlooking the town of Velva (N.D.)
Date: 4/22/1905
Creator: Vachon, John,--1914-1975
Inscription/Marks: On the back: 0075-209, "Town of Velva, N.D." typed, "61640 D", and two stamps of the FSA, one crediting Vachon.
Summary: This view of the town of Velva (N.D.) was likely taken during the 1939 trip into North Dakota by Farm Security Administration photographer John Vachon. The vantage point up a low hill outside of the town has afforded a wide look at the layout of the town on both sides of the railroad tracks which pass through it. Below the rise are small farms with fields laid out for a variety of crops and garden produce. A number of wood-frame structures, sheds and houses lie on this side of the tracks. Immediately across the tracks are grain elevators, auto shop warehouses and the commercial downtown area of Velva. Beyond the tree line at the back edge of town the prairie lifts and rolls off under a thickly clouded sky.
