Title: The Antoine Gingras Trading Post, Walhalla (N.D.)
Date: 1936-1942
Inscription/Marks: On the front: "1" in the upper margin, and a circle around a feature of the building. On the back: col. 75/508, and "Old French Trading Post in charge of Antoine Gingras in 1952 where Benj. Terry one of the Marlyro of St. Joe had lodgings when he was killed by the Indians in the fall of 1852...pg 26-Chas. H. Lee's "The Long Ago"".
Summary: The photograph shows a section of the oldest standing structure in North Dakota, the house and trading post of Antoine Blanc Gingras. Located in what is now Pembina County (N.D.), the log building dates to 1843. It was built for the use of Gingras, a prominent Metis businessman and trader. Just visible on the lower right corner of the building are the distinctive dove tail corner joints. Made of hand-hewn oak logs, this gable roof trading post appears in rough shape in the picture. Boards that have covered the underlying structure are peeling up, and the evidence of many small changes to windows and doorways is in evidence. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as 32PB101, the site is in the care of the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
